Information:

The COVID-19 PCR test detects the presence of the Covid-19 virus in the respiratory tract. It is performed by introducing a swab (a fine cotton swab) through the nostrils into the pharynx and collecting mucosal secretions. Molecular biology techniques are used to detect the presence or absence of viral RNA in the sample within 1-3 days. It is not necessary to fast.

The COVID-19 PCR is the reference test in the case of persons with symptoms compatible with Covid-19 or in those cases in which an active infection must be ruled out with certainty.

A negative result indicates the absence of active infection (no presence of the virus is detected). However, it does not exclude that the patient has been exposed to the virus and after overcoming the disease there is no viral presence. In case of suspicion of past infection, serological testing for antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 is recommended.

Consult your GP or health centre immediately in case of a positive test result. Wear a mask, use good hand hygiene and isolate yourself at home unless your doctor instructs you to go to a medical facility.
